Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare cancer involving the area around the eye. It is most often found in children and is the most common cancer in children affecting the eye area. Treatment has improved considerably over the last few decades.

Treatment Options for Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma

The standard treatment for orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is surgery with the goal of removing all or as much of the tumor as possible, followed by chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. There is a potential for complication from the chemotherapy and that should be monitored closely by ophthalmologists.

What are Orbital Rhabdomyosarcomas?

Symptoms of Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma

The most common symptom of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is a bulging of the eye.

Other symptoms include:

  • Redness of the eyelid,
  • Difficulty moving the affected eye

Rarer symptoms include:

  • Changes in vision, including loss of vision or glaucoma caused by increased pressure in the eye, loss of vision,
  • Misalignment of the eyes,
  • Drooping eyelid,
  • Discoloration of the iris

If the area near the sinuses is involved, there may be nasal congestion or bloody nose. The tumor does not generally cause pain.
