ORPCS Nurse Scientist Receives Malinda S. Mitchell Honorable Mention for A3 Contributions
Dr. Zaina Alzawad, Nurse Scientist from Stanford Health Care’s Office of Research Patient Care Services, helped create an A3 for the Improving Emergency Department Patient Throughput and Experience by Reducing Length of Stay via Creation of a Virtual Visit Track with Maria Cheung (Assistant Patient Care Manager, Emergency Department) and Megan Bliss (Director of Strategic Operations, Neurosciences Service Line). The team received Honorable Mention for the 2023 Malinda S. Mitchell Service Award. Recognizing departments, units, or project partners that demonstrate exceptional quality and teamwork for patient care and improvement based on patient needs, the award is one of the most respected that staff members can receive at SHC. ORPCS congratulates the team for their substantive impact and commitment to providing exceptional service through research!

2023 FAAN Induction Event of New Fellows in Washington, D.C.
For its 50th anniversary, the American Academy of Nursing (Academy) inducted 253 distinguished nurse leaders in the 2023 Class of Fellows, including Stanford Health Care’s Dr. Dale E. Beatty, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, WCS Caritas Coach®, Dr. Michelle Y. Williams, PhD, RN, and Dr. Cassendra A. Munro, PhD, RN, CNOR. The 2023 Class of Fellows represents the positive impact nursing makes in a wide variety of roles and settings including leadership and practice. The event, “Celebrating 50 Years of Leadership, Policy, and Partnership,” took place in Washington, DC between the 5th and 7th of October. Induction into the American Academy of Nursing is a significant milestone for nurses that celebrates their contributions to advance public health. The programs featured personalized videos from each inductee that highlighted their major impacts on the nursing profession.
Office of Research Patient Care Services Holds First Annual All-Staff Retreat
On December 7 & 8, 2023, Stanford Health Care’s Office of Research Patient Care Services held its first annual All-Staff Retreat. The year’s theme and focus was Joy in Work & Research: Through Innovation, Teams, and Appreciation.
The two-day retreat included workshops on Design Thinking, Appreciative Inquiry, and using the DiSC (A Wiley Brand)® “is a personal development learning experience that measures an individual’s preferences and tendencies based on the DiSC® model…to improve teamwork, communication, and productivity” (https://everythingdisc.com).The workshops were facilitated by Dr. Christi Zuber (Nurse Scientist, SHC), Terry Hildebrandt (Executive Leadership Coach), and Dr. Doug McKinley (Teambuilding Coach), respectively. Additional presentations included the SHC Health Equity division’s presentation on the History of Racism in Medicine, interactive breakout sessions, and open discussions and reflections.

ORPCS Nurse Scientist Makes her Mark in Perioperative Research!
In November 2023, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) held its inaugural Perioperative Nursing Research Symposium with great success. The AORN was founded to establish a community for operating room nurses and today empowers perioperative nurses and organizations to support safe surgery for every patient. The Perioperative Nursing Research Symposium included presentations on topics including, but not limited to simulation modeling of a risk assessment scale and specialty clinical research. ORPCS Nurse Scientist, Dr. Kyung Mi Kim, was awarded the symposium’s award for Making Your Mark in Perioperative Research and was invited to present her findings at the Expo in Nashville, Tennessee in 2024. Dr. Kim’s recognized research included her work: Age as a Moderator of the Association between Robot-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty and Changes in All-Cause 30-day Readmission. ORPCS congratulates Dr. Kim for her work and dedication to research!

SHC Office of Research Patient Care Services celebrates 2nd Year of SJSU Nursing Student Interns!
The Office of Research Patient Care Services (ORPCS) welcomed San Jose State University nursing student interns with a celebratory end-of-semester lunch. ORPCS began a mentorship program partnering with San Jose State University’s The Valley Foundation School of Nursing. in 2022. In Fall 2023, ORPCS’ Academic Nursing team was excited to host its second cohort of student nurse interns. The program aims to expose prelicensure nursing students to research in an academic medical center to better understand the process of generating evidence-based knowledge, as well as gaining insight about career possibilities in research. ORPCS looks forward to this continued partnership where nurse leaders can share their knowledge with this promising group of future RNs.

SHC’s Research and Health Equity Holiday Luncheon
To celebrate the holidays, the Stanford Health Care Research and Health Equity leadership team and members of the Stanford Medicine Black Nurses Association dined at the Madera Restaurant at Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park. The Madera Restaurant is known as one of the best Silicon Valley restaurants and features Northern California cuisine that is sustainably sourced. Associate Chief Nursing Officer and Dr. Michelle Y. Williams welcomed the team and made a celebratory toast. The custom menu included a range of options served family style.
